Car Theory Course

To obtain a car driving license (B driving license) in the Netherlands, you must pass both the car theory exam and the practical exam of the CBR. In this way, it is examined and tested whether you are capable of driving and have the necessary skills.

CBR car theory exam

The CBR theory exam consists of 65 questions, divided into three parts. The three parts of the exam are: hazard recognition, traffic knowledge and traffic insight. Each part has its own number of questions and standard of the number of answers that must be correct.  The car theory exam of the CBR lasts a total of 30 minutes. It is possible to request a time extension, which gives you an extra 15 minutes, or you can choose to take the exam with a companion. This is mainly applicable if you suffer from fear of failure or want to take the exam in another language.

To pass the theory exam you must have passed all 3 sections separately. After each exam you will see immediately whether you have passed or failed and you can review the questions.

The 3 different parts of the theory exam

As already mentioned, the CBR car theory exam has 3 different parts. Namely: hazard recognition, traffic knowledge and traffic insight. Each part has a different number of questions and a different standard of the number of answers that must be correct.

Hazard recognition

In the first section with the 25 hazard recognition questions, you are given 8 seconds to think about each question. For each question you have to choose what you would do in that (photo) situation: brake, let go of the gas or do nothing. Each picture shows a traffic situation. It is up to you to make sure that your correct answer will prevent a dangerous or unclear situation. By asking these questions, the CBR knows whether you can assess traffic situations and make good decisions in a short period of time.

Of the 25 questions, you must answer at least 13 correctly.

Traffic Knowledge

The traffic knowledge section consists of 12 questions. The questions consist of multiple choice, questions where you have to fill in a number, drag and drop questions. For this part you get 7 minutes. You can freely browse through the questions, answer them and correct them. This is where the theory from the traffic books comes into play.

Of the 12 questions, you must answer at least 10 questions correctly.

Traffic insight

The third section consists of questions that deal with traffic insight. You get 28 questions here. The questions consist of multiple choice, questions where you have to fill in a number, drag and drop questions. In this part you show that you can use the theory in practice. You get 15 minutes for this part. You can freely browse through the questions, answer them and correct them.

Of the 28 questions, you must answer at least 25 questions correctly.
